Lawyers Who Lunch
So...what do y'all do for lunch and what do you think about it?
I find that over here, there seem to be three categories of lunch options.
As for me and the other associates on my Neverending Project from Hell, we tend to go into the tunnels (NB: downtown Houston has a basement level connecting different buildings together in clutsters and houses many quick restaurants and *Bucks and other shops for people who work around here and can't be bothered to go outside for a real errand run). Once in the tunnels, we walk on autopilot to one of the infinite deli-style sandwich shops, order a sandwich and sit for half an hour while griping about our project and partner.
Then there are the law firm equivalents of the "cool kids" from high school--senior associates who couldn't give a damn. They get in groups, take their cars for ride to a non-tunnel and (what i can only imagine to be a) luxurious fun lunch where there are actual waiters and sunshine.
The last group seems to be the worst and possibly the largest--the people who grab and go and eat in their office. I don't know what my issue is with eating in the office at your desk. I've certainly done it and thought it was no big deal. But it seems weird to do it daily. Of course they have good reason to--finish work faster so they can get the hell out at a decent hour. Or just plain ol "I don't have time to sit and eat. Must work and eat." Both are totally understandable. But something about mixing stacks of paper with shredded lettuce and sauce (be it a salad or a hamburger) just seems depressing. Plus, there's the smell of food that lingers in your small office and eeks out into the hallway throughout the rest of the afternoon, almost as if it's mocking you. Today my hallway smells like a burger. And instinctively I smell it and think "who's the poor kid who had to eat at their desk?" Not sure why my first reaction is pity for the person. I think I have prejudices I need to work through. I'm lunch-ist!

I think your issue with the grab-n-go is well put by the Lizard's comment three years ago when we discussed eating at the Reg while we were studying. She said very succinctly, "I don't like to eat where I shit, so let's go somewhere for dinner." I, for one, have (ironically) overcome that particular mental obstacle. I am even lower on the totem pole than Mr. Sunshine. I bring a Lean Cuisine to work everyday, heat it up, close the door, and chow down while I read and dribble all over my cases...only a little though.
Actually, I'd say both of your positions are higher on the hierarchy. I see it as sort of an enlightened position of "screw you all. i am smarter than you because i am saving time AND money" kind of thing. the grab and go-ers are what perplex me--if you're not pressed for time time and can go get food somewhere and shell out $7-10 for your sandwich/chips/drink, why wouldn't you sit and eat it in a relaxing environment?
maybe i have an uglier office than y'all. it is, after all, full of honey blonde wood, taupe carpet, and flourescent yellow-ish lights.
