It Was The Best Of Times, It Was The Worst Of Times

Good Times.
I suggested to Mr. Sunshine to come to yoga with Tall White Chick and me yesterday. Initially, I was surprised when he acquiesced, but upon further reflection, I should not have been so surprised. So, for those of you I haven't talked to in a bit, I've started yoga, and I love how hard you have to work at it!! I know, I know - it's touchy, feely; it's "spiritual," and full of eastern oriental voodoo, shockingly, I like the meditation period as much as I like the work-out. (And despite what Mr. Sunshine repeatedly claims, that is not weed that they burn at the end of class!)

The Holster (see Cast of Characters if you don't know who this is) came into town and met Voxqueror and me for brunch at Solo 1530. It was yummy, and so good to catch up with him! We're working on persuading him to come back to Chicago. Didn't I mention that we would slowly bring each and every one of you back to Chicago? MU-HAHAHAHA. Our plans are working.

Bad Times.
Somehow, I've been identified as someone who's interested in and who knows something about antitrust law. A few things: 1) I took antitrust last quarter of my last year of law school which means 2) I NEVER went to class (you can ask Voxqueror. I spent that class time in the Green Lounge with her rather than in class) which also means 3) I know absolutely NOTHING about antitrust. I am not kidding. This is all to say that I am in deep doo-doo.

I did one tiny antitrust assignment in September, and now, I'm the go-to first-year associate for antitrust. Last Friday, I got a call from a partner saying that she heard I'd taken "MANY" classes in antitrust, that I was really interested in antitrust work, and would I like to be on a case? Believe you me, I was quick to correct her: "I've taken ONE INTRODUCTORY antitrust class, but I have plenty of time to work on a new matter." I completely skirted the whole interest issue. After all, how can you know if you're interested in something that you don't even understand?

So, thankfully, Voxqueror, Roomie, and in particular Mr. Sunshine, have agreed to be recruited to tutor me. And to think, as I walked out of that final, I thought to myself, "Well, that's the last time I'll have to worry about that." HA. Now, I'll be spending non-billable hours reading an antitrust book by our beloved J. R. Posner. yay.

Inclement Times.
Last Friday evening, I went to the opera by myself to see The Magic Flute. When I got out, a blizzard was raging here; it was ridiiiiiikulus. I stood outside in the snow for a little over an hour waiting for a cab. There were nearly a hundred of us in line. Of course, everyone in the city needed a cab that night. Fat chance for us.

It was interesting - before long, despite being cold, wet, and inappropriately dressed for such weather, most people started being really generous. People volunteered to rotate standing in the lobby and saving places in line so no one would freeze to death. Conversations started up. People started just randomly introducing themselves, and we all even started reshuffling in line so that we could share cabs to maximize every one that showed up. Also, everyone started cheering for each other when the cabs would sporadically appear . It was a little uplifting, I have to say - to know that people aren't always complete idiots and assholes all the time. Heh. My poor toes though - I seriously thought they were going to be frostbitten by the time I got home.

Regardless of what you think oriental or, actually as the initial post put it, eastern oriental refers to, I believe that chatty's point was mostly that it was a bit like trying to make an irish joke and using the word british instead.
