The Art of Lawyering
Well, I hope all of you had good weekends. I had a very relaxing one, sort of.
Friday night, my roommate and I went to Silver Cloud for some comfort food, and then we met up with four of the Russian's and my roommate's friends for drinks. One of the girls was quite the piece of work. Do you remember when you were an idealistic 19-year old who thought that everyone who worked at corporate jobs were evil and that they should be required to open their doors to the homeless? Well, put that idealism in a 26 or 28 year old person. Add alcohol. Stir well. It did not a good drink make.
On Saturday, Roomie and I ended up running a whole bunch of errands together. He decided to register to run the Chicago Half Marathon for Sunday (crazy boy!). So I drove him down to the Merchandise Mart and went to Target. Then, we went to Harlem City Furniture store to hunt for the ever-elusive couch. Um, unless you're into bright colors of fake suede and crappy leather, don't go there for furniture. Then it was on to the art store to buy some more supplies for our art project (see next paragraph), and finally, we went to Cub Foods. We were so exhausted by all this errand running that we proceeded to drink martinis of our own original concotions. Afterwards, we were floor spuds and watched Bride & Prejudice and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I highly recommend both...although maybe not both back to back. Bride & Prejudice was hysterical; I could not stop laughing!! And ESSM is truly an inspiring movie. Okay, enough for movie reviews.
On Sunday, Roomie ran the half-marathon. I slept in. Heh. It was dark and rainy for most of the day, so I stayed at home. The highlight of Sunday: watching Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy with the Russian and Roomie. And the bonus? Baler's out on bail. He called me out of the blue!! Hee! It made my weekend! Even better, he said that he would talk to me soon and that he wanted me to keep him updated on stuff. Be proud of me - I didn't play the card I had in my back pocket yet, i.e. that I'll be in his hometown soon. At least he's not a total jerk, right?
I guess Roomie and I should have known better. We're lawyers, not artists. Let me start at the beginning. We have a huge blank wall that is visible through our front window onto the street. In our discussions about what to do with that gigantic blank space, Roomie came up with the idea that we would make our own original art. We sketched out a few designs and found a color palette from the Crate & Barrel catalog. Yes, we are yuppies. Then, last weekend he showed up with canvases, paint, brushes and primer. Originally, we wanted to just take the brushes and sweep them across the canvases with our colors - quick, fast, easy, and very carefree art. Not when it came time for execution. As I said before, we're lawyers, not free spirits...at least not when it comes to aesthetic matters. The measuring tape and the pencils came out. I kid you not. We carefully made our lines equidistant and straight. At one point, I believe the word, "protractor" was used; thankfully, we didn't have one. The result: very calculated, pre-meditated, geometric lines all over the canvas. Not art, my friends, oh no....this is lawyer art. Heh. I think we're going to try to manufacture a more "sweepy" look by brushing at the edges - something to make it look less...lawyerly. I'll keep you posted. Heck, maybe I'll take a picture when it's done, and post it here. I know, I know - if only you could be so lucky!
Have a good Monday!

Are you going to dry brush the edges, like we did for the musical, or use a wet brush? Sorry...trying to envision what the art looks like in my head and I am remembering the awfulness of painting the set that night and then moving it the next day. ugh.
as for baler, i applaud him for having called you. v. good sign. he's not a complete asshole.
